Description

In this hadith, there is an explanation of the etiquette of sleep and what should be said before lying down. It is narrated that Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, said to him: “When you go to your bed, that is when you intend to go to sleep, perform ablution before going to bed with a complete ablution, as if you were performing ablution for prayer. Then lie down on your right side, as it is more conducive to alertness and getting sufficient sleep. It also helps in waking up in the latter part of the night and is more beneficial for the heart.

Then say, ‘O Allah, I have submitted my face to You,’ meaning that I have surrendered my soul to sleep and entrusted it to You. ‘I have entrusted my affairs to You,’ indicating that I rely on You for all my matters and seek Your sufficiency. I hope that You will be sufficient for me in everything and protect me from all harm. ‘I have taken refuge in You,’ meaning that I have sought your protection and relied on Your guardianship. So, watch over me with Your vigilant eye that never sleeps. And when he said, ‘I have taken refuge in You,’ after saying, ‘I have entrusted my affairs to You,’ it indicates that after entrusting his matters to Allah, which he is in need of and upon which his livelihood depends, he seeks refuge in Him from anything that may harm or hurt him, both from internal and external factors. I did all of this out of desire, meaning hoping for Your mercy, and out of fear of You and Your punishment. For there is no escape from You except to You, and there is no refuge from Your punishment except through seeking Your forgiveness and pardon, O Most Merciful of the merciful. ‘I have believed in Your Book that You revealed,’ referring to the Noble Quran, ‘and I have believed in Your Prophet whom You sent,’ referring to Muhammad, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him.

Then the Prophet, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, mentioned the reward for those who act upon this. If a person dies in that state on that night, they will die upon the religion of Islam and the Sunnah of the best of mankind. Out of his keenness to preserve this beneficial supplication, Al-Bara’ repeated it to the Messenger of Allah, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, and he said the word ‘Rasulika’ instead of ‘Nabiyika.’ The Messenger of Allah, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, corrected him. The reason for the correction is to combine the two positions of ‘prophethood’ and ‘messengership,’ and to enumerate the two blessings. It was also said that it is to clarify the speech, as the angel Jibril (Gabriel), peace be upon him, and others enter into it. It was also said that this is a mention and a supplication, and it is confined to the wording mentioned, as it is possible that these particular words have a virtue that others do not possess.

The hadith also explains the Prophet’s keenness, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, for his ummah (community) in this world and the Hereafter, and that their death should be in a state of obedience and nearness to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. It also emphasizes the encouragement to perform ablution before sleep and to make supplications, so that the last thing a Muslim does is to remember Allah, the Most High.
